I have loved Model A’s my whole life. I currently have 7 Model A’s, all finished and show quality, and yes I drive them everywhere. Ever since I was a kid, I have seen airplane wing tanks sitting at Smith and Edward’s War Surplus yard. Living not far from the Bonneville Salt Flats, I’ve always wanted to build a racer. Driving by Smith and Edward’s last winter, I decided it was time. The aluminum wing tank weighed 290 lbs. and Smith and Edward’s charged me $1.50 per lb.; so I paid a total of $435.00 for the tank. I had a Model A running chassis in my storage garage just waiting for a body. Work on "The Bomb" began in January 2011 and was finished in March 2011.
The “Bomb” is street legal in Utah and has actually been raced on the Bonneville Salt Flats reaching a high speed of 67 mph, pretty amazing for a 1929 4 cylinder Model A engine. Below are some pictures of me transforming the tank into "The Bomb", and "The Bomb" at the Salt Flats.
