Speaking on Business - By Fred Ball
September 20, 2001

This is Fred Ball for Zions Bank, speaking on business.

It seemed natural for Mike Bachman to go into the plumbing business. His great grandfather started Bachman & Sons Plumbing in 1915 in Ogden and was one of the biggest plumbing contractors in Northern Utah. Because Mike is so entrepreneurial he decided that it would be good to own his own company. He was adept at working with his hands and the Bachman name still had some recognition in the Weber County area.

Mike Bachman Plumbing is really a family company. Mike has his great wife Debbie working along side him in the office. A son and a brother are also part of the work force. Mike started out as a one-man, one-truck operation with a small office in his home and has grown into a company with seven service trucks servicing the Wasatch Front and a warehouse with a large office on West 24th Street.

If a Bachman plumber leaves your house without adequately cleaning up, you do not pay for the service. If his plumbers smoke, swear, or do not wear their shoe covers in your home, you do not pay. If a repair fails in the first year, they will repair it again at no charge.*

I sat in Mike's office on West 24th Street in Ogden and enjoyed listening to the tales of the avocations, hobbies, and interests of this multi-dimensional man. He loves his vocation and is very good at it. He also loves to fish and he loves Alaska. He spends time each summer in Alaska guiding other fishermen. He loves old cars and has a very impressive collection of restored antique cars. He also showed me an Ultra-Lite airplane that he loves to fly.

I think it would be great to make a living by providing a needed service to customers by using your hands and your expertise and skills. Usually, when you need a plumber it is an emergency and you need immediate attention. Mike has a sign on his trucks and his business card that shows a cartoon of a pair of feet sticking out of a kitchen garbage disposal and the caption that says, "I'm at your disposal." And indeed he is-24 hours a day.

For Zions Bank, I'm Fred Ball. I'm speaking on business.

*Concerning repairs: We cannot guarantee drains, for too many things can go down a drain that is out of our control of clogging again.
