Water Saving Tips
- Instead of letting tap water run to get cold water for drinking, store drinking water in the fridge.
- To do the same with hot water, install an InstaHot faucet on your kitchen sink.
- Repair dripping faucets. You waste 2,700 gallons of water a year by a faucet that drips at a rate of one drop a second.
- Make sure all your pipes are insulated, this gets you hot water faster.
- Think of other uses for water before pouring water down the drain. Could you use it for cleaning or maybe to water your plants?
- To make sure your home is leak-free, perform the meter test. To do this: plan a time for a 2 hour window when no water will be used, then read your meter before and after the time you set. If your meter stayed the same you do not have a leak.
- If you don't already have a water-saving shower head, get one installed.
- Perform the toilet leak detection test at least once a year. To do this: (1) Wait 5-10 minutes after the last flush cycle, (2) Remove cover to the tank and drop a few drops of food coloring into the tank, (3) DO NOT flush, (4) If color appears in toilet bowl within 30 minutes, you have a leak. Note: Flush as soon as the test is done since the food coloring may stain your tank and bowl.
- Don't let water run when you brush your teeth, shave or wash your car. Turn it off.
- Run full loads of dishes and laundry.
